Powering or re-powering your bus fleet with an EV drivetrain is the single best way of responding to the current drive to improve air quality. But there are wider benefits too: by fitting an electric or range-extended drivetrain you’ll be benefiting from a range of technological advances that will ensure your fleet performs to its best capacity in a number of key areas.
Prioritising the environment: zero emissions bus with no noise
Government plans to improve air quality include the creation of a number of Clean Air Zones in major cities by 2020. The most polluting vehicles, including old buses, will be discouraged from entering the Zones through the introduction of charges. The Mayor of London has also announced a strategy for improving air quality by 2025, including the implementation of an Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) by 2018. This will see the introduction of requirements even more stringent than those of the capital’s current Low Emission Zone (LEZ).
MAGTEC’s electric drive system for buses has no tailpipe emissions, uses regenerative braking technology to eliminate the particles emitted by conventional brake pads and operates with almost no noise. Typical environmental savings on an EV city centre bus have been calculated at 33 tonne of CO2 and 535 kg of NOx per year.

In fact, overall maintenance costs will typically be reduced by as much as two-thirds. Brake wear is also reduced and fewer oil changes are required. Cost savings of using electricity rather than diesel to power a typical city bus were calculated to be £20K annually.
Repowering a vehicle with a range-extended drive system will see any capital outlay recouped through fuel savings within two or three years of operation. Such vehicles will achieve average fuel savings of 40%.

Energy efficiency tests on a sightseeing bus operating in York city centre exceeded initial expectations of 0.67 miles per kwh and achieved a potential range of over 90 miles or a practical range of over 76 miles per day – exceeding the typical 65 miles/day duty cycle of a sightseeing bus.
